Dressers and Chests...What to know and look for before buying.

If you have plenty of floor space and love what you see, value is not important - just buy it.  But if floor space is at a premium, then quality and value are important, but there are some things you should know that will help you make an informed decision about your purchase:

  1. Every furniture maker, whether antique or new, considered the cost of materials and labor before starting. The final cost is used to determine the retail price.

  2. Real wood or synthetic wood is an important consideration. Real wood is always the best choice, and wood has proven it can last centuries, whereas synthetic wood has not been able to stand the test of time.

  3. Cost cutting  increases profits so knowing what to look for is the most important thing you can learn.

  •        Measure the depth of the dresser top and then measure the depth of the drawer to determine whether the drawer is full size or short.

  •        Measure the outside of the drawers and then measure the inside to see if there is more cost cutting.

  •       Take the drawer out and turn it over.  Look to see how it slides. Look inside. Wood on wood is best. Sticky wood just needs to be sanded like          it came from the maker. Metal slides can bend and are almost impossible to fix. Plastic slides break easily.

  •        Particle board and plywood look cheap and don't hold up well after continued use.

There are other things to look for but these should eliminate most mistakes made without this knowledge.
